Understanding Pigmentation

Uneven skin tone is treatable at its source.

Pigmentation disorders — from localised dark spots and melasma to widespread uneven tone — occur when melanocytes produce excess melanin. This can be triggered by sun exposure, hormones, inflammation, or genetic predisposition, and often requires a multi-pronged treatment approach.

At Aliva Aesthetics, we diagnose your specific pigmentation type before recommending any treatment. Melasma, for instance, requires a completely different approach to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation — and getting the diagnosis right is what determines whether treatment succeeds.

Causes of Pigmentation

What triggers uneven skin tone.

Pigmentation has multiple causes — and the most effective treatment depends entirely on correctly identifying which is driving your concern.

Sun Exposure

UV radiation is the leading cause of pigmentation. It stimulates melanocytes to produce excess melanin, causing sunspots, freckling, and diffuse tan unevenness.

Hormonal Changes

Melasma is driven by oestrogen and progesterone — triggered or worsened by pregnancy, oral contraceptives, and hormonal fluctuations.

Post-Inflammatory Marks

Any skin trauma — acne, cuts, burns, or laser — can trigger post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), particularly in darker skin tones.

Genetics

Some individuals are genetically predisposed to uneven melanin distribution — including conditions like lentigines and familial hyperpigmentation patterns.

Medications

Certain drugs — including some antibiotics, chemotherapy agents, and anti-hypertensives — can trigger drug-induced hyperpigmentation.

Skin Ageing

Age spots and liver spots are clusters of melanin that accumulate in sun-exposed areas over decades — among the most common concerns in patients over 40.

Types & Variations

Types of pigmentation we treat.

Accurate classification of pigmentation type is the first and most critical step in effective treatment — determining both the approach and realistic outcome.

Frequently Asked

Your questions, answered.

What's the difference between melasma and sun spots?
Melasma is hormonally driven and typically symmetrical; sun spots are caused by UV exposure and are usually discrete. They require different treatments — which is why accurate diagnosis matters.
How many sessions do I need?
It depends on the type and depth of pigmentation. Most laser and peel courses require 4–8 sessions spaced 3–4 weeks apart.
Can pigmentation come back?
Yes — particularly melasma, which is triggered by sun and hormones. Consistent SPF use and maintenance treatments are essential for long-term results.
Is treatment safe for darker skin tones?
With the right technology and settings, absolutely. We have extensive experience treating Indian skin tones safely, using appropriate protocols to avoid post-treatment hyperpigmentation.
Do I need to use sunscreen?
Rigorous daily SPF use is essential before, during, and after any pigmentation treatment. Sun exposure without protection will undo treatment results quickly.
Can I treat pigmentation while pregnant?
Some treatments are not safe during pregnancy. We will advise on safe options during your consultation and can build a safe at-home management plan.
