Eye emergencies

Not sure if it's an emergency? Here's how to tell

Most eye problems can wait for a normal appointment. These can't — if you notice any of the following, don't wait it out.

  • Sudden vision loss or a "curtain" over your sight — in one eye or both, even if it seems to improve after a few minutes.
  • New flashes of light or a sudden rise in floaters — small dots or cobwebs drifting across your vision. Can be an early sign of a retinal tear.
  • Severe eye pain, especially with nausea or halos around lights — can point to a sudden pressure spike inside the eye, which needs urgent treatment.
  • Any chemical splash, or a foreign object that won't rinse out — see the rinsing steps alongside →
  • A direct blow, cut, or penetrating injury to the eye — don't press on the eye or try to remove anything embedded in it.
  • Sudden double vision, or one pupil suddenly larger than the other — occasionally linked to a wider neurological issue, not just the eye.

Chemical in the eye? Do this first

Rinse immediately with clean water for 15–20 minutes, tilting your head so water runs away from the unaffected eye. Remove contact lenses if you can. Then get seen right away — every minute matters with chemical exposure.

For anything on the list to the left, please don't wait for a routine appointment slot.

FAQs

Questions, answered simply

How often should I get my eyes checked?
Adults under 40 with no known eye conditions should have a comprehensive eye examination every two years. After 40, annual checkups are recommended. Patients with diabetes, glaucoma risk factors, or a family history of eye disease should be examined at least once a year — or more frequently if advised by their doctor. Children should have their first eye exam before starting school, and regularly thereafter.
Is cataract surgery safe? What is the recovery time?
Cataract surgery using phacoemulsification is one of the safest and most commonly performed surgical procedures in the world. At MediVision, it is performed as a day-care surgery under local/topical anaesthesia, with most patients returning home within a few hours. Vision improvement is typically noticeable within 24–48 hours, and full recovery takes 4–6 weeks. Our surgeons will guide you on post-operative care and restrictions specific to your case.
Am I a good candidate for LASIK eye surgery?
LASIK is suitable for patients with stable refractive errors (myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism), adequate corneal thickness, and no underlying corneal diseases. A pre-LASIK evaluation — which includes corneal topography, wavefront analysis, and a full eye examination — is mandatory before any decision is made. Our refractive surgery team will assess your eligibility honestly and recommend the most appropriate procedure, which may include SILK or PRK if LASIK is not the right fit.
What are the symptoms of glaucoma?
In its most common form (primary open-angle glaucoma), glaucoma has no symptoms in the early stages — no pain, no redness, no obvious vision change. Peripheral (side) vision is typically lost first, and by the time patients notice it, significant optic nerve damage may have already occurred. This is why regular eye checkups — including intraocular pressure measurement and optic nerve assessment — are critical for early detection. Acute closed-angle glaucoma, by contrast, causes sudden eye pain, headache, nausea, and blurred vision and requires emergency treatment.
What is the difference between a routine eye test and a comprehensive eye examination?
A routine eye test typically measures visual acuity and prescribes glasses or contact lenses. A comprehensive eye examination is much broader: it includes a full assessment of the anterior and posterior segments of the eye, intraocular pressure measurement, dilated fundus examination, and screening for conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal disease, and diabetic changes. At MediVision, every consultation is a comprehensive evaluation.
Is eye care available for children at MediVision?
Yes. Our paediatric ophthalmology team specialises in eye care for children from infancy through adolescence. We assess and manage refractive errors (requiring glasses), amblyopia (lazy eye), squint (strabismus), congenital cataracts, paediatric glaucoma, and other childhood eye conditions. Our team is experienced in making young patients comfortable, ensuring examinations are accurate and distress-free.
Does MediVision accept health insurance?
Yes — we work with major health insurance providers, TPAs, and government health schemes including Arogyasri, Ayushman Bharat, CGHS and ECHS. See the full list of accepted insurers and schemes here. Please contact our team before your appointment to confirm your specific coverage for the treatment you require — our billing team will assist you with the documentation and claim process.
What happens if I need surgery — will I be admitted?
Most surgical procedures at MediVision — including cataract surgery, LASIK, and many retinal procedures — are performed as day surgeries. You arrive on the day of your procedure, undergo surgery, recover briefly under observation, and return home the same day with a family member. For complex surgeries or patients with specific medical conditions, admission may be required, and your surgeon will discuss this with you in advance.
