Cervical Lymph Node Biopsy

Persistent neck swelling or an enlarged lymph node? A cervical lymph node biopsy pinpoints the cause — our ENT surgeons perform it with care and accuracy.

Cervical lymph node biopsy

Around 600 to 700 lymph nodes are scattered throughout the body, and the cervical lymph nodes are located in the neck. Lymph nodes help the body recognise and fight infection and destroy abnormal cells. Minor infections and insect bites can make them swell, but a node that stays swollen and enlarged beneath the skin may need medical attention.

A lymph node biopsy is performed by our ENT surgeon to detect disease in the lymph nodes. Visit Dr. Gouda Ramesh at our head and neck surgery hospital in Hyderabad.

When It’s Needed

When a lymph node biopsy is needed

A biopsy helps find the cause of neck swelling, such as:

Neck swelling that doesn’t settle
A persistent enlarged lymph node
A suspected infection
Suspected lymphoma
Suspected cancer or its spread
An unexplained lump in the neck
Types of Biopsy

Types of cervical lymph node biopsy

The right type is chosen for your situation. A sample is removed from the swollen node and sent to a pathologist for examination.

Needle biopsy

  • Takes about 10–15 minutes using a fine needle
  • The site is sterilised and the area is numbed
  • The needle takes a sample from the swollen node
  • A bandage is applied afterwards

Open biopsy

  • Performed under local anaesthesia
  • Part or all of the lymph node is removed through a small cut
  • The site is closed with a stitch
  • A bandage is applied

Sentinel biopsy

  • Used to check whether cancer is spreading
  • A blue dye (tracer) is injected near the cancer site
  • The dye travels to the sentinel node where a tumour drains
  • That node is removed and examined
How It Helps

How the biopsy helps

A cervical lymph node biopsy removes a sample — or the whole node — from a swollen lymph node so it can be examined by a pathologist. This is the most reliable way to find the cause of persistent neck swelling, whether an infection, lymphoma or cancer, and to guide the right treatment.

Your ENT surgeon chooses the most suitable biopsy and carries it out with care and accuracy, helping you reach an accurate diagnosis faster.

What to expect

  • A quick needle biopsy or a small open procedure
  • Local anaesthesia for an open biopsy
  • The sample is examined by a pathologist
  • A stitch and bandage where needed
  • Results guide the right treatment

When to see your ENT specialist

Please book an appointment promptly if:

  • You have neck swelling or a lump lasting more than two weeks

FAQs

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about cervical lymph node biopsy.

It is a procedure to remove a sample (or the whole node) from a swollen lymph node in the neck so a pathologist can examine it and identify the cause of the swelling.

It helps identify the cause of persistent neck swelling, including infections, lymphoma and cancer, so the right treatment can be planned.

The main types are a needle biopsy (a quick fine-needle sample), an open biopsy (part or all of the node removed through a small cut under local anaesthesia), and a sentinel biopsy (using a dye to check whether cancer is spreading).

Gouda Ramesh ENT Hospital performs cervical lymph node biopsies with care and accuracy to diagnose the cause of neck swelling, with branches in Chandanagar and Hanamkonda.

See an ENT specialist if neck swelling lasts more than two weeks, a node keeps growing or feels hard, or swelling comes with night sweats, weight loss or fever.
