Thyroid surgery (thyroidectomy)

Thyroid surgery, also known as thyroidectomy, is performed to remove the affected part of the thyroid — a butterfly-shaped gland in the neck. It is used to treat thyroid disorders such as cancer, a non-cancerous enlargement (goiter) and an overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism).

After a partial thyroidectomy the gland often works normally, but when the entire thyroid is removed, daily medication is needed to replace normal thyroid function. Make an appointment with our thyroid specialist for thyroid treatment.

Why & How

Why thyroidectomy is done

Your doctor may recommend a thyroidectomy for:

Why it is done

  • Thyroid cancer — the most common reason for thyroidectomy
  • A non-cancerous enlargement (goiter), especially if large or causing pressure
  • An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) when other treatments aren't suitable
  • Suspicious thyroid nodules at increased risk of being cancerous

How it is done (procedure)

  • Imaging with ultrasound, CT scan or MRI
  • Blood tests to check thyroid hormone levels
  • A laryngoscope examination of the vocal cords
  • A small incision to access the thyroid and remove the affected part and any involved lymph nodes

Recovery & benefits

  • Many patients (especially after hemithyroidectomy) go home the same day
  • Some stay in hospital overnight
  • Full recovery usually takes about 2–3 weeks
  • Surgery removes cancer and reduces the impact of thyroid disease
Treatment

Thyroidectomy & what to expect

Depending on your condition, your surgeon may remove part of the thyroid or the whole gland. After a partial thyroidectomy the remaining thyroid usually works normally; if the entire thyroid is removed, you will take daily thyroid hormone replacement to keep your levels normal.

Before you go home, your doctor will explain how to care for the incision and stitches and what symptoms to watch for. Most people recover fully in about two to three weeks.

Recovery at a glance

  • Often a same-day or overnight hospital stay
  • Simple wound and stitch care at home
  • Full recovery in about 2–3 weeks
  • Hormone replacement if the whole thyroid is removed
  • Clear guidance on symptoms to watch for

When to see your ENT specialist

Please book an appointment promptly if:

  • You have a neck lump or swelling (goiter)
  • You have trouble swallowing or breathing
  • You have persistent hoarseness or voice change
  • You have symptoms of an over- or under-active thyroid
  • A thyroid nodule has been found on a scan

Gouda Ramesh ENT Hospital offers expert thyroid evaluation and thyroidectomy surgery for goiter, nodules, hyperthyroidism and thyroid cancer, with branches also in Chandanagar and Hanamkonda.

A thyroidectomy is surgery to remove all or part of the thyroid gland. It is used to treat thyroid cancer, a large or overactive goiter, hyperthyroidism, and suspicious thyroid nodules.

After a partial thyroidectomy the remaining thyroid often works normally. If the entire thyroid is removed, you will need daily thyroid hormone replacement to maintain normal function.

Many people go home the same day or after an overnight stay, and full recovery usually takes about 2 to 3 weeks with simple wound care.

See a specialist for neck swelling, difficulty swallowing or breathing, persistent hoarseness, symptoms of an over- or under-active thyroid, or a thyroid nodule found on a scan.
